Editorial Review:

Product Description:
"The desire of individuals and groups to puff themselves up by imposing their vision on other people is a recurring theme in the culture wars"

Thomas Sowell takes on a range of legal, social, racial, educational, and economic issues--along with "the culture wars"--in this latest collection of his controversial, never boring, always thought-provoking essays. From "gun control myths" to "mealy mouth media" to "free lunch medicine," Sowell gets to the heart of the matters we all care about with his characteristically unswerving candor.

Sowell skewers the "mealy mouth media" that calls terrorists "insurgents" and rioters "demonstrators." He reveals how "the idiocy of relevance" in learning has been particularly destructive in the education of minority students at all levels. He explains how a free market and a strict construction of the 14th Amendment would never have permitted the laws that asked Rosa Parks to give up her seat to a white man. And he clarifies the confusion between equal opportunity and equal results that resides behind many kinds of "spoiled brat politics."

With Ever Wonder Why?--drawn from the best of his popular syndicated newspaper columns--Sowell once again takes dead aim at the self-righteous and self-important forces in government, media, education, and other areas of our society, offering the thoughtful perceptions, commonsense insights, and straightforward honesty we have come to expect from one of conservatism's most articulate voices.

Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Among his published works are Basic Economics, Late Talking Children, and Race and Culture. He has also published in both academic journals and the popular media including Newsweek, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and 150 newspapers that carry his nationally syndicated column.

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A true intellectual
Being a Conservative myself, I naturally would like someone like Thomas Sowell. I consider him a true intellectual, because, unlike other "Intellectuals" who make what they know hard to understand, by using words and terms the average person can't or at best find hard to understand, Thomas Sowell makes the complicated easy to understand, and to me, that takes a lot more talent.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ever Wonder Why?
Thomas Sowell stands out in a sea of American non-fiction writers. I'm not done with the book, but it seems like every paragraph says something profound. He truly has his finger on the pulse of America.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Battling Slugs at Cocktail Parties
Do you ever find yourself surrounded by SLUGs (Sanctimonious Liberals Uttering Gibberish) at cocktail parties? Do you find that your eyes can only roll so far to the back of your head when you hear that capitalism is dead, free markets don't work, or the only way to fix a problem is for the government to intervene....

If you haven't already met, allow me to introduce your new best friend, Thomas Sowell.

This collection of essays is a quick read and BONUS, gives you ammo ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Consise Clear Logic
This is a collection of short articles by Dr.Sowell. I enjoyed reading one or two a day and being able to refer back to his articles as the topics are again discussed in the press.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Think of it as a tray of delicacies - not as the meal
This is a collection of brief and very to-the-point essays, not a in-depth introduction to Thomas Sowell. I'm working on a couple of his more focused works, and find them much more challenging.

Get this book as an introduction to him and to his philosophy. These essays are terrific little appetizers; it's easy to read a couple in-between other tasks.

As a medical person, I especially appreciate how he distills the nonsense in discussions of health economics. When ... Read More
